Week 9 - Change of technical formalities
28 September 2017
So I talked to Meg this morning about my project and she explained that for a VR Headset, I would have to share with other students and my project would be in a different area compared to most students. I didn't even know there was that area open for the last exhibition and so I got concerned about the 'exposure' of my project being seen by the majority of people.
Hence why I am changing my strategy about this:
1. I will switch to google cardboard. People can connect their phones to the iMac and can run the VR experience. I can provide a google cardboard or buy a nice plastic one for $27 (even though my self-concious me dislikes the idea of plastic for this). This would also answer the question for accessibility because people will not have VR Headsets lying around at home (most likely, some are nerds!) but phones they do.
2. I might still use a proper headset for the presentation, just because it is a formal presentation. But it depends on availability of the VR Headset and if Google VR and HTC VIVE have the same size dimension requirements.
On the other hand I realised that adding interaction with the space is quite important and I won't be able to do that because one I would need expertise with the scripting which I don't have (and I don't have the time anymore to learn it) and Google VR has only limited selection of interaction. So either way I'm limited. Andre also told me to have a backup, in case technology and/or time are not in favour of me, and as in back up he meant a minimal value product, a design output that at least gets the idea of my across, but isn't necessarily finished. I probably should talk to Tristam or Ant about this, but I think at the moment with only 3 weeks left that is probably more realistic. After I covered the minimum, I can then always add something extra!
So at the moment I am looking at the planning and executing of my project as such:
1. Create the 3D Space in Maya and run it through a VR headset, so that the panel can get the idea and the rough experience of what it could be. I could use this to let them walk through a room that existed in the past (so I would need to show a picture in my presentation before hand). This could be part of my multiple room Memory Space.
2. Make a video of a 'demo run' and mock up how the interaction could look like (which I could do with Premier Pro and After Effects). This could also demo how you could
3. Use that demo video in Exposure. So there won't be a VR set up but you can go through the website, and a demo video to get the idea. That would be easier to set up the VR.
