Week 7 - Class

15 September 2017

After getting the information of what we're going to do till Week 10, and the quick check-in with my supervisor, I have been fixing up my Maya and Unreal Engine software, as there were a couple of hick-ups when I installed it (full storage, Xcode not wanting to install but important for shading in Unreal,...).

Then I talked to Ant again who was my advisor for the Supercrit/Exchange in Week 6.

  • Build the environment in cardboard first, and take photos from different angles. That way you get an idea how a user would walk through with VR.
  • When you build the environment, do it roughly first so that you nail the experience. THEN you start detailing it down.
  • Look at different aesthetics. When you need a break from building, have a look at different aesthetics. Make sure you don't make the environment too realistic looking though, as that can make the user uncomfortable again (like people did with 'The Polar Express' Movie Animation! It was on the borderline of realistic, which felt creepy to a lot of viewers). If you found a fitting one for your project, start to create it and build it into the environment.
  • Overall all, you need to make the 3D environment now. You won't be able to do different ones due to time (as the idea is that everyone is different and would have a different environment to walk through so it makes sense to have mutltiple), so focus on one and mock-up the rest.
  • Also make the 3D environment more like a walk-through, rather than just one room. One room can easily feel restrictive (like an Escape Room).-> walk around like Ikea, exploring
  • Charles Dickens - guided
  • aesthetic e.g. 10 yo, not too old
